Memory Companion is used by a person who has trouble remembering things — we call them the primary user. It is usually set up by a family member or caregiver on their behalf.
If you are setting this up for someone else, please make sure they understand that the tablet listens and writes down conversations when the microphone button is pressed.
No location, no contacts from your phone, no advertising identifiers, no usage analytics, and no account — there is nothing to sign up for.
On the tablet itself, in the app's own storage. There is no cloud account and no server of ours holding your conversations. If the tablet is lost or reset, that data is gone unless a backup was saved.
The app includes a Backup & restore screen so a caregiver can save a copy somewhere of their choosing. That file is not encrypted and not password-protected — anyone who opens it can read the conversations inside. Keep it somewhere private.
Two companies process content so the app can work. Each receives only what it needs, does its job, and returns a result.
Audio recorded during a conversation is sent to Deepgram, which returns the written transcript with speaker labels. Deepgram operates with zero-retention settings by default and does not use this audio to train its models.
When a question is asked, the question and relevant recent transcripts are sent to Google's Gemini API, which returns an answer. The same applies to short conversation summaries.
This app uses Google's paid API tier, deliberately. Under Google's paid terms, prompts and responses are not used to improve or train Google's products, and are retained for at most 30 days solely to detect abuse. Google's free tier permits training on submitted content with indefinite retention — which is why this app does not use it.
If Google's service is unavailable, the app may fall back to a second provider (OpenAI) under equivalent no-training terms, or to an answering method that runs entirely on the tablet with nothing sent anywhere. Any backup provider actually in use is named in this policy before it is used.
We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with data brokers, advertisers, or anyone else. We may disclose information if legally required to, or to protect someone's safety.
When the app records, it captures everyone in the room, not only the person using it. The app announces out loud that it is listening, every time, so that nobody is recorded secretly.
Laws about recording conversations differ by state and by country. In some places every person being recorded must agree first. Telling people the tablet is listening — and stopping if they would rather you didn't — is the responsibility of whoever is using it. This is not legal advice.
This app is not intended for or directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Everything sent to or from the app travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Data on the tablet is protected by Android's own device encryption, which is why we recommend keeping a screen lock on it. No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected or who receives it, the date at the top changes and the change is described here. Material changes are announced in the app.
